The Aftermath of Hurricane Dorian: Emergency Care in the Bahamas

In early September, while I was in West Palm Beach, Florida, for my obstetrics/gynecology clerkship at St. Mary’s Medical Center, I prepared for Hurricane Dorian barreling towards us. Since it was my first storm, I made certain to take the precautions. I stocked up on water, canned foods, and even holed up in the medical center for a few nights. In the end, the storm ended up moving northeast of Florida’s coasts and missed my city.

“Imagine What a Few Hundred Future Doctors Can Do:” Climate Change and Health

One year ago, more than 100 medical organizations, representing over six million health care professionals in 125 countries signed a global “call to action.” That statement began with the words“Climate change is a global health emergency.” The World Health Organization has a list of the top ten threats to global health, and climate change is at the top of the list this year. The message is clear: Climate change poses an alarming threat, and our health is on the line.

A Place of Gratitude: Professionalism at the Larner College of Medicine

I recently had the honor of sitting on the Dean’s Professionalism Statement Task Force. I am not sure what prompted me to apply, but I was genuinely excited about being selected. At our first meeting, Dean Page made it clear to us that this statement was incredibly important. He and Dr. Leonard had selected a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and residents to comprise the task force.
