“Next up is Nazia…” I heard over the microphone. I quickly texted my sister that I was about to go up to the podium to see where I matched. My friend Vanessa accompanied me on stage for moral support. My heart was beating impossibly fast, and my hands were shaking as I introduced myself to the crowd. I opened the envelope and my heart skipped a beat as I said, “Oh my God!! I’m going to ALABAMA!!!”

Fourth Year Reflections – When Medicine and Life Collide

With graduation quickly approaching, I can’t believe my four years here at the College of Medicine have gone by so quickly. There have been many wonderful and many challenging experiences. As I reflect back on my most meaningful memories, I realize it was preparing me for when my own personal life and medical life would collide. Being a medical student made me better prepared for what I faced as a daughter. And what I endured as a daughter will make me a better physician.

“Good Morning, Doctor” & the Power of Words in Medicine

“Good morning!” I say to one of the nurses I walk by in the hallway at St Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. “Good morning, Doctor,” she responds, as she passes me. I continue down the hall, feeling like something isn’t right. What is it? I’m wearing pants…I remembered to put on deodorant…I’m not sleeping through call…Did she just call me doctor? I scan the hall. Nobody else there. She was definitely talking to me. She thinks I’m a doctor!
