During the past year, I have been a student in the Larner College of Medicine’s Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship at Central Vermont Medical Center. This gave me the opportunity to follow multiple patients through their illnesses and their journeys, getting to know them over the course of time. Some patients recovered quickly; others had multiple complications and took many months before they felt better. One patient in particular I will always remember. Read more

Journeying on the Global Health Pathway: Honoring My Families

My name is Victor M. Abraham II. I will be heading to the Dominican Republic this summer through the Global Health Program at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. I have been interested in global health since I was very young.
My mother is an internal medicine physician who graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in 1991. Born in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, she fled her home country as a child due to the authoritarian regime and sought refuge in America. Soon after her arrival, her father died in a car accident, leaving her mother a widow and the sole caregiver for her, her three brothers, and her ill mother. A river of sweat is slowly trickling down the small of my back, gathering tributaries from the rolling hills formed by my scapulae. My collared shirt is damp in several areas, even though I have an undershirt on today. The heat and humidity are unforgiving at this time of day. I adjust the stethoscope around my neck as we walk into the intensive care unit (ICU). A blast of cool air greets me.
