White Coat Ceremony

I will be receiving my white coat this week. Even writing that sentence down is odd for me. We’ve all worked so hard to reach this point, but now that I’m here, it all seems so surreal.

“Good morning!” I say to one of the nurses I walk by in the hallway at St Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. “Good morning, Doctor,” she responds, as she passes me. I continue down the hall, feeling like something isn’t right. What is it? I’m wearing pants…I remembered to put on deodorant…I’m not sleeping through call…Did she just call me doctor? I scan the hall. Nobody else there. She was definitely talking to me. She thinks I’m a doctor!

As I close my locker door, I feel as if I’m leaving behind the trappings of my student self: my laptop with all my notes, my papers etched with messy anatomical drawings and my colored pens. I take a deep breath. This is the real thing, I think as I walk away from my locker, slowly making my way to the coffee kiosk in the hospital lobby where my group will meet.
